Why Does Your Resume Need to Stand Out?
And guess what? Your resume is your first impression.
Here’s why it matters:
- Limited time lang ang binibigay sa bawat resume.
- Recruiters only spend 6 to 10 seconds scanning a resume.
- You’re competing with other first-timers.
- Marami kayong walang experience, pero kung maayos at malinis ang resume mo, mas tataas ang chance mong matawag for an interview.
- It shows effort and professionalism.
- Kahit wala ka pang work background, a well-made resume tells the employer na seryoso ka and ready to learn.
- Helps tell your story.
- Through your skills, education, and experiences (kahit extracurriculars or volunteer lang), you can still show na may potential ka.
Ika nga, “No experience? No problem!” Ang importante, ipakita mo kung ano ang meron ka—and do it well.
How to Write a Resume for Your First Job
Follow these steps to create a standout resume kahit wala ka pang work experience.
1. Pick the Right First Job Resume Format and Template
There are 3 main resume formats na pwede mong gamitin. Bawat isa, may sariling focus—skills, experience, or both.
1. Reverse-Chronological Resume
- This format lists your education and experiences starting from the most recent going backward.
- Ito ang pinaka-common at easiest to read.
2. Functional Resume
- Instead of experience, this format focuses on your skills and achievements.
- Ginagamit ito minsan ng career changers or mga walang work experience.
3. Combination (or Hybrid) Resume
- Combines both skills and experience.
- Medyo advanced, but useful if may konti kang experience + solid skills.
For most first-time job seekers, we recommend using the reverse-chronological format.
Bakit?
A reverse-chronological resume looks as follows:

2. Write Down Your Contact Information (Correctly)
It’s important for the recruiter to have at least two ways to contact you.
This includes:
- First and last name
- Email address – dapat professional-looking (ex. juan.delacruz@gmail.com, not cutie_juan123@yahoo.com)
- Phone number – active at tama ang digits
- Location – city and province is enough (ex. Quezon City, Metro Manila)
Aside from these must-haves, you can also include:
- LinkedIn URL – Magandang way ito to complement your resume.
Recruiters usually check this, so make sure:- Updated ang details mo
- Consistent with your resume
- May profile photo and summary
Tip: Huwag mo nang isama ang birthday, age, religion, height, or photo—unless required by the job post.
3. Include a Resume Objective
Recruiters spend around 7 seconds scanning each resume.
So, your resume objective/summary is your chance to make a great first impression.
A resume objective/summary is just 2–3 short sentences that show:
- Your skills or strengths
- Your career goal
- Why you’re a good fit for the role
Perfect ito for fresh grads or those without work experience yet. It helps show na motivated ka, and you’re ready to learn and contribute.
Mention the skills or traits na relevant sa position.
✅Correct Example:
Creative and motivated recent graduate with a B.A. in Marketing from the University of Michigan. Seeking permanent employment in the field of marketing after completing successful internships in 2 major media companies. Looking to further develop my market analysis skills and contribute to future marketing strategy developments at XY Company.
❌Incorrect Example:
I am looking to put my marketing skills into action by initially working for the marketing department of a well-known company until I can finally get to an executive position.
4. List Your Education (in Detail)
For first-time job seekers, your education is one of your biggest strengths—so don’t be shy to highlight it.
List your education like this:
- Program/Strand Name
e.g. ABM Strand, STEM Track, B.A. in Marketing - School Name
e.g. Quezon City National High School, XYZ University - Years Attended
e.g. 2021 – 2023 - GPA (optional – only if mataas)
- Honors (if meron)
e.g. With Honors, Dean’s Lister, Cum Laude - Exchange Program or Trainings (optional)
e.g. Business Bootcamp participant, Google Digital Skills Training
✅Example:
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology
Technological University of the Philippines | 2019 – 2023
- Major in Computer Science
- GPA: 1.75
- Cum Laude
5. Include Relevant Experience
As a recent graduate, the recruiter knows you don’t have any work experience — and that’s OK.
As long as you’re applying for a junior or entry-level position, experience isn’t something expected from you.
But this doesn’t mean wala kang pwedeng ilagay. You can still show relevant experience—anything na may kinalaman sa skills needed for the job.
These can include:
- Internships / OJT
- Volunteer work
- Freelance projects
- School orgs or events
- Academic projects
Ang goal mo dito is ipakita na you’ve done something productive, and that you have potential—kahit hindi pa siya official job.
✅Example:
Team Leader – Feasibility Study Project
ABM Strand, San Mateo SHS | Aug 2022 – Nov 2022
- Led a group of 5 students to create a business proposal
- Presented in front of panel; scored 95% and qualified for school expo
✅Example:
Graphic Design Intern
XYZ Digital Solutions | Jan 2023 – Mar 2023
- Created layouts for social media and posters using Canva
- Helped improve visual engagement for 3 brand pages
6. Highlight Your Skills
As a first-time job seeker, skills are one of your biggest selling points—so make sure to highlight them well.
There are two types of skills you can include in your resume:
Soft Skills
These are personal traits and behaviors.
They help you work well with others and adapt to different situations.
Examples:
- Teamwork
- Communication
- Time management
- Problem-solving
- Leadership
Note: Soft skills are great, but they’re hard to prove on paper. So be careful with just listing them.
Hard Skills
These are technical or job-specific skills—mas konkretong skills na madaling ma-test.
Examples:
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
- Canva or Adobe Photoshop
- WordPress or basic HTML/CSS
- Video editing (CapCut, Premiere Pro)
- Data analysis tools (Excel, SPSS)
Tip: I-tailor mo ang skills mo based sa job posting.
Example:
Let’s say you’re applying as a Junior Graphic Designer, and the job post says:
Looking for someone skilled in:
- Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
- Canva, PowerPoint, Keynote
- Organized, can manage multiple tasks
Your Skills section should look like this:
Skills:
- Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
- Canva and Keynote
- PowerPoint presentations
- Time management
- Detail-oriented
- Ability to work under pressure
Note: Only list the skills na talagang meron ka. Recruiters can easily tell kung nilagay mo lang ‘yan for impression.
7. Mention Optional Sections
You can add optional sections to give more value and make your resume stand out.
These sections aren’t required, pero they can show your personality, interests, or extra qualifications—especially useful if wala ka pang formal work experience.
Here are some optional sections you can include:
✅ Certifications & Trainings
- Online courses or workshops you’ve taken (e.g., Google Digital Garage, TESDA short courses, LinkedIn Learning)
- Industry-related certificates
e.g. “Social Media Marketing – HubSpot Academy”
✅ Awards & Achievements
- Recognition you received in school, contests, or orgs
e.g. “Best Capstone Project 2023” or “Top 10 Out of 200 Students”
✅ Languages
- Especially useful kung multilingual ka
e.g. English – Fluent, Filipino – Native, Korean – Basic
✅ Hobbies & Interests
- Show a bit of your personality (just make sure it’s relevant or adds something to your profile)
e.g. “Video editing, Photography, Blogging”
You can also read:
8. Stick to the One-Page Limit
“How longa resume should be?” — classic question, diba?
The short answer: it depends.
But since you’re writing a first job resume, the answer is: definitely one page lang.
Wala ka pa namang work history or 10+ years of experience to put in there, so no need to make it long.
Kahit may achievements ka sa orgs, school, or freelance,
⚠️ hindi kailangan ilagay lahat. Only include what’s relevant sa job na ina-applyan mo.
Recruiters scan resumes in seconds lang —so kung two pages ‘yan na puro extracurriculars at hobbies, chances are hindi na nila babasahin yung second page.
9. Format Your Resume Properly (Do’s and Don’ts)
So make sure it looks neat, professional, and easy to scan.
Here’s a simple guide to formatting your first job resume the right way:
✅Do’s:
- Use standard margins (0.5″ to 1″ on all sides)
- Choose a professional font like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman
- Font size should be 10–12 pt for the body, and 14–16 pt for your name or headings
- Make your name stand out sa taas ng resume — bigger font size, bold
- Use clear and consistent headings (e.g., Education, Skills, Relevant Experience)
- Bullet points > long paragraphs — easier to read
- Keep it concise — short, direct sentences only
- Save and send your resume as PDF para di magulo ang layout
❌Don’ts:
- Don’t use flashy designs or loud colors — simple is best
- Don’t use creative or hard-to-read fonts (like Comic Sans or script styles)
- Don’t include a photo, unless the job post asks for it
- Don’t write long paragraphs — recruiters won’t read walls of text
- Don’t cram everything in — leave some white space to make it breathable
Formatting shows you’re professional and detail-oriented — qualities na recruiters really value.
